Virtual class tech explained

The technology for accessing a virtual yoga class is simple, let's look at it together! I use Zoom for my virtual classes. You do not need to purchase Zoom for class. When you sign up for a class, you'll receive and email with a Zoom class link, it'll look something like this:

To join class, click on the "Join Zoom Meeting" link from your audio and video enabled device (video is optional so if you don't have a device with a camera, you can still join). If you don't already have Zoom installed on your device, you will be prompted to install it. A prompt will appear allowing you to choose to enter the meeting with or without video. Video is optional, but I suggest it for a variety of reasons (you can read more on that here).

Upon entering the meeting, you will have a variety of controls available to customize your experience. I suggest making your view full screen (if on a laptop) by clicking the open square (yellow highlight in screenshot below). You can control your audio and video preferences in the bottom left corner (blue). By default in my sessions, you will be muted upon entering the meeting with the option to unmute at any time. You're able to chat with the teacher and fellow students using the chat function (green). To leave the meeting, select "Leave Meeting" (red).

Once more students enter the meeting, you may see their videos, if you wish to only see the instructor (or have the instructor be the largest presented), right click on the video and choose "Pin Video". If you are on a smartphone, iPad, or tablet, you can double click on the video you wish to pin.

For my classes, I will included a suggested Spotify playlist. You can choose to practice with no music, or your own playlist as well. If you would like music during your practice, play it on a separate device than the one you are using Zoom on. Zoom takes precedence and will not allow another program to play music.

So now we're set up and ready to join a class, but you're curious about what it will look like. Below is a short clip from a Vinyasa Flow class, check it out.

I hope to see you in class soon!

Additional troubleshooting:

I can't hear anything. Seems simple, but check your volume first. If you're still not able to hear, make sure your device isn't paired automatically with bluetooth headphones or a speaker.

I can't see anyone. It's possible that no one else has joined the meeting yet (including the teacher). If you know others have joined, they may have chosen not to share their video. Be patient, and if you're still having issues, use the chat feature to alert the teacher so they can assist.

My video isn't working/showing up. You can check to see which camera device on your laptop is set to work by choosing the up arrow next to the video control in Zoom. Additionally, check you settings to make sure that your camera is on and has rights to work through your browser. Lastly, ensure you don't have a sticker over your camera.
